Why me? Why now? What am I supposed to be doing to fill my days? As humans we have an inbuilt need to ‘hunt’ for answers to the questions that seemingly flood our consciousness both day and night.
Pondering on this a while back and realising how frustrating it can be when there’s no neat back-and-forth response in this dialogue between our many selves, I wondered if we could tempt the psyche away from the paralysis of overthinking and into a more calm and curious state with…yet more questions.
Hear me out. These wouldn’t be the garden variety ‘big’ questions that often induce feelings of anxiety, hopelessness or even dread. Instead, they’d be a selection of ‘small’ yet mighty questions that satisfy the need we have to know more about what makes us, us, without all the weight attached.
What’s getting my regular vegan hot chocolate fix all about?
Why wasn’t I bowled over by Barcelona?
What’s something I’ve done that’s really challenged a perception I had of myself?
How would I spend the ideal Saturday with friends?
How would I spend the ideal Saturday alone?
What do I gravitate towards on my infrequent IKEA visits?
What are one or two constants in my life that will still be there at the end of 2026?
You get the drift, and a certain AI chatbot may be able to help you generate some questions of your own in a similar vein. The idea being that you move away from being stuck on don’t-have-an-immediate-answer-now questions such as ‘when am I going to get the money together for my dream home?’ to ones that are infinitely easier to create mental imagery around and help get that grey matter fully flexing.
And once the mind is in a natural state of flow and play, who knows what else can come to the fore?
